About this tool

Calculate your tax-free HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) for business driving in your personal car, motorcycle or bicycle. Compares what your company reimburses against HMRC statutory rates (45p for first 10,000 miles, 25p thereafter) to calculate claimable Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) on your tax return.

How to use it

  1. 1 Choose your vehicle type: Car/Van, Motorcycle, or Bicycle.
  2. 2 Enter your annual business mileage (excluding ordinary home-to-work commuting).
  3. 3 Enter what your employer pays per mile and select your income tax bracket to see claimable tax relief.

Questions

What are the HMRC approved mileage rates?

For cars and vans: 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year, and 25p per mile for each mile thereafter. Motorcycles are 24p/mile, and bicycles are 20p/mile.

Can I claim tax relief if my employer pays less than 45p?

Yes. If your employer pays less than the HMRC approved rate (e.g. 25p or nothing), you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) on the difference via form P87 or Self Assessment.

Can I claim mileage for commuting to my normal workplace?

No. HMRC rules strictly exclude ordinary home-to-workplace commuting. You can only claim for travel between temporary workplaces or travel required for business visits.
