2024 Spring Budget Rule Changes:

From 6 April 2024, the High Income Child Benefit Charge threshold increased from £50,000 to £60,000, and the taper range doubled to £80,000. You lose 1% of your child benefit for every £200 earned between £60,000 and £80,000. Even if your income is over £80k, you should still claim child benefit to protect the child's National Insurance credits.

Questions

How does the child benefit taper work over £60,000?

For every £200 of adjusted net income earned over £60,000, 1% of your total child benefit is paid back as a tax charge via Self Assessment. At £80,000, 100% is clawed back.

What is the new Child Benefit threshold for 2024-2026?

Starting 6 April 2024, the High Income Child Benefit Charge threshold increased from £50,000 to £60,000. The charge tapers at 1% for every £200 earned between £60,000 and £80,000.

At what salary is Child Benefit completely lost?

Child Benefit is 100% taxed back when the highest-earning parent’s adjusted net income reaches or exceeds £80,000.

Should I still claim Child Benefit if I earn over £80k?

Yes. Even if you choose to opt out of cash payments, submitting the claim protects the non-working parent’s State Pension National Insurance credits and ensures the child receives an automatic National Insurance number at age 16.
