About this tool

Calculate vehicle travel expenses for road trips across South Africa (e.g. Johannesburg to Durban on the N3, or Cape Town on the N1). Factor in trip distance in kilometres, vehicle fuel consumption in L/100km, inland or coastal fuel prices, SANRAL toll fees, and split costs fairly among passengers.

How to use it

  1. 1 Enter your trip distance in kilometres and toggle round trip if returning.
  2. 2 Enter vehicle fuel consumption (L/100km) and current fuel pump price per litre in Rand.
  3. 3 Optionally include highway toll plaza fees.
  4. 4 Specify the number of passengers sharing the journey to calculate cost per person.

Questions

Why are petrol prices different inland versus coastal in South Africa?

Inland petrol prices in South Africa are slightly higher than coastal prices because they include the pipeline transport cost from coastal refineries and Durban harbour to Gauteng and the interior.

How do I calculate road trip fuel cost in South Africa?

Multiply distance in km by (L/100km ÷ 100) to find litres needed, then multiply by the petrol/diesel price per litre and add highway toll plaza fees.
