Questions

What is the difference between short-term and long-term capital gains in the US?

Assets held for one year or less are short-term and taxed at your ordinary marginal income tax rates (up to 37%). Assets held for more than one year qualify for long-term rates (0%, 15%, or 20%).

What is the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)?

An additional 3.8% surtax applies to the lesser of your net investment income or the amount by which your Modified Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $200,000 for single filers ($250,000 for married couples).
